"Dianthus" Original Watercolor Painting
Title: Dianthus
Year: May 2024
Watercolor on Paper
Size: 8.5 ×11.5 inches, framed to 11×14
Dianthus are sometimes referred to as “Pinks”; which doesn’t refer to their color, but to their scalloped edges which look like they were cut with pinking shears. These colorful flowers are edible- and make any dish look elevated. To paint this piece, I started by masking the flowers, stems, and leaves so I could paint the background first. I played around with soft and hard edges in the background by painting a few different layers of leaves- some wet-on-wet, and some wet-on-dry. After taking off the masking fluid, I masked the center stamens to protect them from the pinks of the petals, and then proceeded to paint each flower petal individually to make sure that it looked scalloped. The number of layers on this piece makes the details pop from the background and gives it the 3D effect that I love.
This original watercolor painting is featured in the book, “Just One Comfrey”, a Counting book by Wisconsin Food Forests. The book is scheduled to be released July, 2025.It features edible plants that grow well in Wisconsin’s climate. Some are edible for human consumption, while others are edible only for critters and birds that call Wisconsin home.
