"Purslane" Original Watercolor Painting
Title: Purslane
Year: 2025
Watercolor on Paper
Size: 8×10 inches, framed to 11×14
I’ve seen purslane growing and have always thought it was a weed- who knew you could eat it! The reference photo was a challenge to translate into watercolors- so many tiny leaves and stems that intertwined and spiraled out of a central point. I had to edit a lot of leaves out of the final image just so it wouldn’ t be too busy of a painting. I wanted to contrast the greens of the leaves with a bright background, so I chose purples and pinks. If you look closely at the stems, you’ll notice a similar magenta hue. To keep the leaves from getting to dark, I used a dry brush technique to leave little patches of white paper shining through.
This original watercolor painting is featured in the book, “Just One Comfrey”, a Counting book by Wisconsin Food Forests. The book is scheduled to be released July, 2025. It features edible plants that grow well in Wisconsin’s climate. Some are edible for human consumption, while others are edible only for critters and birds that call Wisconsin home.
This original watercolor painting was painting using Daniel Smith watercolors on Arches cold-pressed paper. Using professional supplies means your painting will stay brilliant and colorful for years. It also comes signed, with a Certificate of Authenticity. It is matted and framed. (gray frame with white double mat, glass, with hanging wire for easy hanging).
***Framed pieces will only be available for local pickup. If you need this painting mailed to you, it will come un-framed, but still custom matted. ***
